DR. ASHA ROSE MIGIRO APPRECIATE YOU:: International, regional conventions to be translated into Kiswahili

The Minister for Constitution and Legal Affair Dr Asha Rose Migiro

The government is translating international and regional convention protocols and resolutions to Kiswahili, the Minister for Constitution and Legal Affair Dr Asha Rose Migiro told the National Assembly in Dodoma yesterday during the question and answer session.
Migiro was responding to a question by Special Seat MP Roseweeter Kasikila who wanted to know when the government would translate the conventions and resolutions for the interest of the public.
Responding, Migiro explained that the East African Community Treaty of 1999 states that the official language to be used is English and article 137 states that Kiswahili is only a language for communication.
She said according to the Treaty of the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) of 1992 and its amendments of 2001, the official languages are Portuguese, French and English.
“The regional and international convention, resolutions and protocols are written in the language agreed by the community,” she said.
However, the Minister for Constitutional and Legal Affairs reassured the National Assembly that the government would translate all international and regional convention, protocols and resolutions into Kiswahili
Migiro said the translations have begun and starting with national laws and already 21 bills have been translated.
In his supplementary question, Tabora Legislator Aden Rage wanted to know why judgment in various courts including the High Court is written and read in English while the audiences at the court are Swahili speakers.
Responding, Migiro said some measures have been taken to ensure that courts use the national language, Swahili. No further details were offered.
