The national chairman of Chadema, Freeman Mbowe, who was admitted to Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH), was yesterday responding well to treatment and expected to be discharged in the evening.
He had been rushed to the hospital after feeling unwell soon after
escorting the party’s Presidential candidate, Edward Lowassa, to pick up
election forms at the National Electoral Commission (NEC).
Mbowe was taken to the Doctors Plaza health facility in Kinondoni, Dar es Salaam, from where he was referred to the MNH.
MNH cardiologist Dr Tulizo Sanga told reporters that Mbowe was
responding well to treatment. He said the Chadema chairman was suffering
from fatigue and exhaustion.
Dr Sanga explained that fatigue and exhaustion can be caused by many
factors, some being extended working hours and improper dietary timing.
He said these can cause that condition in some people.
“We admitted him here since Monday evening to closely watch him for 48
hours so that he can get time to rest in order that his condition
improves. We expect to discharge him this evening (Tuesday),” he said
He added that Mbowe was under the care of eight specialists, among them
four from the emergency department and others from the Cardiac
Institute.
Speaking to journalists at the Institute where he was admitted, Mbowe
said: “My condition is now stabilising; I am doing very well after being
treated by MNH specialists.”
He said he was sent to the MNH for further checkups after feeling dizzy.
Apparently he had a hectic day on Monday when four opposition parties
forming the Coalition of People’s Constitution (Ukawa) accompanied their
presidential candidate Edward Lowassa tor pick-up forms for contesting
the presidency at the National Electoral Commission (NEC).
According to him, the journey started from the Civic United Front (CUF) headquarters at Buguruni to the NEC in the city centre.
It ended at Kinondoni Biafra grounds where opposition supporters
gathered, and it was a long and tiring journey for him, he said.
He urged Tanzanians who wish him speedy recovery to continue doing so,
urging them not to worry since his health was improving. He hoped that
he would soon be ready for campaigns towards the next October General
Election.
“I came out of my ward because I want UKAWA supporters and Tanzanians at
large to know that I am now getting better and everything will go back
to normal soon.
“My nurse initially disagreed with me but I begged her so that I can
talk with you face to face in so that Tanzanians understand the
situation and believe that I am doing well.”
For his part, NCCR-Mageuzi National Chairman James Mbatia said Mbowe is a
human being like anybody else, and might get ill at any time. He also
confirmed that Mbowe was doing well.
Mbatia also appreciated the treatment and services that Mbowe was
getting from MNH nurses and specialists, saying they were encouraging.
He added that Mbowe’s condition was not so bad for people to be
worried.
“I have come to visit him here and he is fine. I want to ask people to
be patient while doctors treat him, although it is challenge for many of
us,” he said.
Mbowe’s condition changed suddenly on Monday evening soon after
concluding the journey from CUF headquarters to the Kinondoni Chadema
headquarters. He was later rushed to a hospital nearby for First Aid
then referred to the MNH.
